BIO


Born in Tokyo and based in New York, Sayoko Osada is a Japanese-born artist, architect, director, and production designer with an emphasis on genre-fluid worldbuilding and storytelling to challenge and expand perception. 

Her work is characterized by a collagist multimedia blend of architecture and filmmaking.  Exploring the human mind and experience, she seeks to inspire awes in the audience by orchestrating multisensory sequence of encounters uncovering the essence and the ineffable. 

As one of the few female creative directors of color in the live entertainment industry, she is committed to cultivating more diverse creative fields through collaboration and mentorship.



ARTIST STATEMENT


I work as a director and production designer for live, immersive, film/video, set/spatial, and more. Grounded in my foundation in architecture and graphic design, with self-taught knowledge in filmmaking and animation, I develop creative directions and designs with distinct visual identities and blur dimensional boundaries.

Sometimes music provides the context for my work.
Sometimes I create the context for the music. 

Often in collaboration with musical artists, 

I center my experimental practice around exploring and proposing alternative spiritual spaces for collective processing, often in collaboration with musical artists. From community spaces to underground nightclubs, I work with video and light to breathe life into the exisitng architecture to sculpt ephemeral and psychic dimensions to guide participant’s energy.
